"Come what may, and love it!......Yet in spite of discouragement and adversity, those who are happiest seem to have a way of learning from difficult times, becoming stronger, wiser, and happier as a result." ~ Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin

WANTED: comments

Just wondering what kind of things your family does to stay consistent with family scripture reading. Also, what special things have you done or do you do if you have/had small children.

"When Satan truly wants to disrupt the work of the Lord, he attacks God's plan for His children. He works to drive a wedge of disharmony between a father and mother. He entices children to be disobedient to their parents. He makes family home evening and family prayer inconvenient. He suggests family scripture study is impractical. That's all it takes, because Satan knows that the surest and most effective way to disrupt the Lord's work is to diminish the effectiveness of the family and the sanctity of the home. "

our routine:
morning reading is just me and the girls cause case leaves for work before the sun peaks over the ocean. we read RIGHT AFTER breakfast, at the table, bowls/plates whatever still sitting there... sometimes they're still chewing. our goal is 5 verses per reading session. sometimes we go more if they're cooperative and want more.

sometimes we read at lunch too, if they ask for it. they think scripture reading is part of meal time routine. haha!!

family scripture reading happens right after dinner. again at the table, dishes and food and whatnot still scattered about. sometimes we read again at tuck-in time, again this is if they ask for it.

so our scheduled times are after breakfast and after dinner. our "sometimes" times are after lunch and just before bed.

and we say family prayers at night-night time, all kneeling around addi's bed.

but FHE is a struggle. we don't really know what to do there... i feel like every night is FHE HAHA!! and i don't know how to make mondays different.

We FINALLY reached 2 Nephi....this is truly a miracle! :) My sisters & our families are doing "The Amazing Scripture Race". There are 3 "Pit Stops" & whoever reaches those first gets to "pick" a "prize" provided by the other 2 families. Ex. ice cream, getting the car washed, some kind of service, etc....Whoever makes it to the end of the B of M wins dinner to a restaurant of the winning families choosing. This has been great for us & Averi (Lucas is still a bit young, but he does sit & listen as we read). We have only missed a few nights!!! As for FHE, there are lots of great blogs, sights, books to find lessons that are "age & kid" appropriate. I actually look forward to FHE. We have by passed a lesson & just read the B of M if we are running behind on time. I think that ANYTHING is better than doing nothing. Also, as we are reading the scriptures, we make sure to stop every few verses & make sure the kids know what we are reading, this has been very helpful! Hope this helps! Good luck! Miss you guys!

We have made it something we do before bed, instead of a book from the bookshelf, we read the BOM. Kids always think of every excuse not to go to bed, so when we say "bedtime" she says, "But we haven't read the scriptures yet!" It's her bedtime 'stall' with getting a drink and going potty.

Hey Erin! It's Paige Krauss...well, used to be Krauss anyway. Found your blog, and this post reminded me what we always did...we got to act them all out. We each picked a character and had to read the scriptures (the kids book version) to get our scripts. It was always a blast! Hope you're doing well.

Each night when we start the bedtime routine we read scriptures. We have the BOM for Families that breaks the chapters down a bit and we read a section of that. It is usually about 10 verses so it is not too long for their attention span. ( My brother's family reads that too but they also read the corresponding definitions, quotes, and questions to discuss.) Then we say our night time family prayer, then brush teeth, then they get their 'special time' to read with me. But they know they don't get special time with mom until after scripture and prayer. It has really worked for us.

Scripture reading has always been a struggle. We have an off-again, on-again relationship with the scriptures at our house. :0) FHE isn't too much better, but I have done a few things. I have taken the primary lesson for that week or the week after and given that, we have read stories from the Friend and discussed them. I've taken scripture stories and we act them out or put up pictures to go along with it. For example we had a lesson about Noah's ark (when Genesis was real little) and I printed off pictures of an ark and animals and she got to put the animals into the ark at the appropriate time. We've also talked about service and baked cookies. Then brought them to a neighbor. The lessons don't need to be long when they are this little. Even 5 minutes of a lesson and then a fun activity to emphasize the point will work!
It's a little easier to plan when they're older and their attention span is bigger. Good luck!!

Hey Erin, Been enjoying reading your blog. We struggle with scripture reading too but we have found that if we can read the Book of Mormon reader from the distribution center the kids will still stay interested since it has pictures. Now that Mandalyn is reading some she gets to help out too.
